Worst and Best Things

Two poems by Emma Bowen

1998

Worst Things

My sister I definitely think of first
Then it's the taste of Kiwi Fruit Burst
Smelly socks and my dad's feet
Salad and greens that I have to eat
Party broadcasts on the telly
Things like cabbage instead of jelly
Rats that nibble through the cables
Very wobbly chairs and tables
When I heard my cat was dead
Having a very uncomfy bed
Having to tidy up my room
When people talk about doom
My sister shouting to my mum
Filly pink knickers from Aunty Sue
Seeing things floating in the loo
Leaky pens and dirty rubbers
Cleaning out dusty cupboards
School dinners most of the time
Game shows that involve slime
I could think of a million more
But I wouldn't want to be a bore.

Best Things

Cute kittens and cuddly cats
Fashion and clothes, nail varish and that
A two hour swim at Coral Reef
A bundle of toys, chocolates and sweets
A holiday to almost anywhere
And a new cute cuddly teddy bear
A hot sunny day and a paddling pool
Some designer clothes that are really cool
My sister and mum when they're in a good mood
Hearing about my sister's new found dude
Saturdays when I am going out
Always having my dad about
Discos and parties
Tubes full of Smarties
Watching TV, all the cartoons
Coming home to find tidy rooms
A nice warm bath with lots of soap
When my mum can cope
I could think of a million more
But I wouldn't want to be a bore.
